The California Dreamin’ subjects are taken from photographs shot on trips romanticizing the natural forms of Southern California. This painting represents a departure from the series because it’s monochromatic. Loose brushwork, value, and temperature are the key elements. Originally a horizontal I rotated this intimate work midstream and felt a new and immediate connection to the composition. Which goes to show that an artist needs to be open to anything while painting.
